First year students at the London School of Economics (LSE) are required to pick a compulsory course from three subjects of which the most popular is likely to be a waffle fest around transforming climate futures. The reading list for our weather-bothering future leaders looks rather exciting with a book edited by Jessie Kindig. This features essays on direct climate action including sabotage and eco-terrorism. The ground – and oil rig – breaking collection includes an introduction by Andreas Malm, whose 2022 book on how to blow up an oil pipeline discussed destroying industrial infrastructure rather than relying on peaceful lobbying and protest. Kindig also edited this odious if fantastical book and at the time said that “it’s immediately clear that destruction, sabotage and occupation are acts of love”.

Militant action

This beauty went on to state that Malm’s writing “is always infused with a kind of hope, and that he shows us how militant action is, in fact, hope in its purest form”.

‘Hope not Hate’, to coin a hard Left mantra – one to go alongside ‘peaceful protest’ as nearby buildings are ablaze and ‘defund the police’ as looters run riot through the streets. For the Left, violence – except when committed by their opponents, naturally – is just an act of exquisite love.

Today’s students have been indoctrinated and brainwashed almost from birth with junk climate science and messaging that the world is on an unstoppable handcart to Hell. Why not feed them obscene texts that flirt with violence, destruction and terrorism. After all, why should they care about the rule of law when they have been told that they have no future anyway.

The LSE-recommended Kindig book is titled Property Will Cost Us the Earth: Direct Action and the Future of the Global Climate Movement. According to the publisher, Verso Books, Malm’s call for the environmental movement to start sabotaging fossil fuel infrastructure to save our planet, “has sparked vibrant discussion on the Left about ‘the green state’ direct action and violence, ecological Leninism and existing pipelines struggles”.

Verso then adds that discussion “has also reignited longstanding fears of eco-sabotage on the Right”. No, really, how did that happen!

The book includes a number of essays, and on one thing the writers are agreed, concludes Verso: “Protecting private property at the expense of our planet and our children’s lives is not a cost we should be willing to pay.” The cynical might suggest that this is the sort of stuff some juveniles lap up, keen at that age to piss off mummy and daddy.

Agitprop

The rest of the LSE climate reading list is bog standard social science agitprop with some books that appear to be first class academic gibberish. Anyone know what a book titled The Age of Complexity in Governing Complex would be about? Don’t bother answering. O death where is thy sting might come to mind when faced with reading The Politics and Practice of Carbon Offsetting: Silencing Dissent. Hopefully, the dissent silencing here is not of the type suggested by the dynamite dreamers to be found elsewhere on the reading list.

But today’s young students have been facing this climate battering for years. Starting at a very early age watching cartoons infused with Armageddon climate messages from Sky Kids (animals fart, eat less meat and dairy) and CBeebies (starving polar bears due to climate change), through school syllabuses and examinations riddled with fake alarms derived from ‘settled’ pseudoscience, and onwards to ‘don’t discuss’ woke Left-wing universities. Awaiting their presence on the LSE first-year climate module is the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change, one of three such operations in British universities bankrolled by the green billionaire investor Jeremy Grantham. Input from Grantham and its staff members is noted for the course that runs for two terms and carries academic credits.

Written work is required and no doubt students are warned not to use AI to complete assignments. Needless to say, such ‘cheating’ is to be condemned although echo chamber universities, like mainstream media, must be prone to students using more efficient artificial composition methods. After all, when an unthinking education path has been set from early childhood, why go to the trouble and effort of writing thousands of pre-set narrative words when AI could secure you top grades in seconds?

Monbiot

Bombing pipelines, presumably with appropriate IRA-style earlyish warnings, has long seemed to excite the interest of fashionable commentators on the hard Left. In April 2023, George Monbiot wrote in the Guardian that he found Malm’s arguments for a campaign of violent attacks on the industrial economy “compelling”. He said that he would back saboteurs “who have acted with courage and coherence”, but he would not blow up pipelines himself. Nice to know, of course, that George will not be doing any of the dirty work himself.
