The Great Barrier Reef has done it again: exceptionally high coral cover
The coral cover in the Great Barrier Reef is now as high as, or higher than, at any point during the past 35 years of systematic monitoring, Australian professor Peter Ridd recently explained.
In this recent presentation, Peter Ridd (fired in 2018 by James Cook University for his dissenting academic views) once again shows that the Great Barrier Reef is in far better condition than the public has been led to believe. Drawing primarily on long-term monitoring data collected by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), he contends that the reef has experienced six consecutive years of record or near-record coral cover. These data contradict decades of media reports and scientific warnings suggesting that the reef is on the verge of collapse.

Exceptionally high
Ridd opens by celebrating the latest AIMS survey results, stating that coral cover is now as high as, or higher than, at any point during the past 35 years of systematic monitoring. This evidence fundamentally challenges the widespread narrative that climate change is causing the imminent destruction of the reef. As he puts it: “The Great Barrier Reef has done it again”, referring to another year of exceptionally high coral cover.
Ridd recounts the geological history of the Great Barrier Reef. He notes that the modern reef is only the latest in a long sequence of reefs that have grown, died, and regrown over hundreds of thousands to millions of years as sea levels naturally rose and fell during glacial cycles. Today’s reef itself is built upon enormous layers of dead coral accumulated over countless generations. Coral death is therefore not an abnormal event but an essential part of the reef’s natural development.
Ridd next describes the early scientific exploration of the reef during the 1960s, when scuba technology enabled researchers to study it systematically for the first time. One of the earliest concerns involved outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, which consume living coral. At the time, some scientists feared these outbreaks could destroy the reef within a decade. Ridd emphasizes, however, that these concerns were understandable because researchers possessed very little historical information about how coral reefs naturally fluctuate.
The establishment of long-term monitoring by AIMS during the 1980s marked a turning point. Regular surveys measured coral cover and documented the abundance of crown-of-thorns starfish across numerous reefs. These decades of observations revealed that individual reefs repeatedly experience dramatic cycles of coral loss followed by rapid recovery. According to Ridd, the principal causes of these fluctuations are tropical cyclones and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish—both natural disturbances rather than human-induced processes.
2012
Ridd highlights the period around 2012, when coral cover across the Great Barrier Reef reached one of its lowest recorded levels. At the time, many scientists and media outlets interpreted this decline as evidence that the reef was approaching irreversible collapse due to climate change. However, Ridd shows that the subsequent decade demonstrated a very different outcome. Beginning in 2012, coral cover steadily recovered until it reached record levels by 2021 and has remained exceptionally high since then. If low coral cover was widely portrayed as proof of catastrophe, then similarly record-high coral cover should be recognized as evidence that the reef remains remarkably resilient.
Rather than criticizing individual researchers, Ridd directs his criticism toward what he describes as a broader institutional culture. Many scientific organizations, government agencies, and environmental groups have become financially and professionally dependent on portraying the reef as being in constant danger. This creates incentives to emphasize negative developments while minimizing positive ones. He estimates that thousands of people now work in organizations whose missions are tied to protecting the reef, and he believes this fosters systematic bias in interpreting scientific evidence.
Groupthink
Central to Ridd’s argument is the concept of groupthink. Dissenting scientific views are often discouraged and that researchers questioning prevailing interpretations encounter difficulties obtaining funding or having their work taken seriously. Reflecting on his own experiences, he claims that concerns about quality assurance and scientific methodology have been ignored because they challenge the dominant narrative. He summarizes his criticism by stating: “The villain is groupthink and the madness of crowds.”
The presentation also discusses coral bleaching. Ridd notes that several recent years—including 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024—have been described as severe bleaching events that supposedly devastated fast-growing staghorn and plate corals. However, the current abundance of precisely these coral types contradicts those claims. If repeated bleaching had destroyed them, he asks, how could they now exist in record quantities? He concludes that the impacts of bleaching have been substantially overstated and points to what he considers to be corals’ remarkable capacity to recover from elevated water temperatures.
Openness
Ridd argues that scientific institutions require reform to encourage greater openness to alternative interpretations of data. The objective should be to reduce institutional incentives that continually portray the reef as being only a few decades away from destruction. While he criticizes how scientific findings are communicated, he nevertheless praises AIMS for collecting an invaluable long-term dataset spanning more than four decades. He argues that these very data support a far more optimistic assessment of the reef than the one commonly presented to the public.
At the same time, Ridd does not claim that coral cover will remain permanently at record levels. He acknowledges that future cyclones or crown-of-thorns outbreaks could substantially reduce coral abundance, just as similar events have done many times throughout the reef’s history. Such declines, however, are portrayed as part of a long-established natural cycle of death and regrowth rather than evidence of irreversible decline. He remarks that “Life and death will go on. But the reef will be fine.”
In his concluding remarks, Ridd describes the Great Barrier Reef as one of the world’s best-protected ecosystems. He argues that it remains largely untouched by direct human activity and benefits from extensive conservation efforts. Based on the long-term monitoring data, he concludes that the reef is healthy, resilient, and capable of recovering from natural disturbances, making the recent record coral cover one of the most encouraging environmental stories of recent years.
